YouTube's announced 2027 Partner Program changes create a new diligence date for channel acquisitions. The changes do not automatically make an already monetized channel more or less valuable, but they do change what a buyer should verify before assigning value to ad, Premium, Shorts, and fan-funding income.
What changes on February 1, 2027
YouTube says new applicants for ads and Premium revenue sharing will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Channels already in YPP are not moved back through those entry thresholds.
The update also introduces activity requirements for channels that want to keep earning. The official terms include several ways to demonstrate activity, followed by a 90-day restoration window when a channel drops below the standard. Read the current details in YouTube's YPP changes guide.
Separate current status from future compliance
A green monetization indicator proves only the status visible on the review date. Ask the seller to show the Earn tab, active monetization modules, current policy notices, and the deadline notice for the updated terms. Record the channel URL and date in the same screen capture so evidence cannot be mixed with another channel.
Do not price the channel as non-monetized merely because the new applicant threshold is higher. Equally, do not assume existing status will remain commercially useful if the channel is inactive and the operating plan cannot meet an activity route.
Calculate the activity margin
Build a simple margin for each applicable route. Compare trailing 365-day qualified watch hours with the announced 1,000-hour activity level, trailing 90-day qualified Shorts views with one million, and the recent publishing record with the upload alternative described by YouTube.
Use the weakest normal quarter, not the launch month of a viral video. A channel that clears a threshold only because of one exceptional upload has less operating margin than one supported by a broad archive and repeat viewers.
Audit updated terms before completion
YouTube says creators should accept the revised modules by January 31, 2027 to continue earning from the associated features. Before an acquisition closes near that date, add a specific escrow check: the seller demonstrates the current terms state, and the buyer verifies the same state after ownership transfer.
This check is not permission to share a Google password. Use documented ownership roles and the secure transfer workflow, then verify the Earn tab from buyer-controlled access.
Rebuild revenue by source
Request monthly revenue by ads, Premium, Shorts, memberships, Supers, Shopping, and other sources for at least the trailing year. A blended total hides which module or viewing format produces the cash flow. It also makes the 2027 terms harder to evaluate.
Reconcile YouTube Analytics with finalized payment records while preserving private payment information. Use the channel valuation framework to normalize revenue and subtract production costs rather than applying a multiple to gross receipts.
Stress-test an inactive channel
For a channel with a strong archive but few recent uploads, model three outcomes: the archive maintains enough qualified viewing activity, a modest publishing schedule restores the margin, or monetization pauses while the buyer rebuilds activity. Assign time and production cost to the second and third cases.
The seller's historical effort is not a substitute for the buyer's operating plan. If the production team, source files, or on-camera talent will not transfer, the activity forecast must start with the resources the buyer actually controls.
Add a 2027 escrow checkpoint
Write the checkpoint in measurable language. It should identify the channel, modules reviewed, evidence date, updated-terms state, policy notices, and post-transfer confirmation. Avoid a vague promise that monetization is “permanent,” because platform status is conditional and future results cannot be guaranteed.
The buyer should also review the inauthentic-content acquisition audit when output depends on templates or very high publishing volume.
Buyer decision rule
Treat current YPP membership, future activity margin, and transferable production capacity as three separate facts. Proceed only when all three are understandable. Reduce the valuation or add a holdback when the channel has thin activity margin, unaccepted terms near the deadline, or no credible plan to keep publishing.
Questions buyers ask
Will the 8,000-hour threshold remove existing channels from YPP? YouTube says the new ads and Premium entry thresholds apply to new applicants, while existing channels are evaluated under the updated activity provisions.
Does an active channel need both watch hours and uploads? The published activity rules provide alternative ways to qualify. Verify the latest wording in Studio and YouTube Help at the time of the deal.
Should a 2027 change alter the purchase multiple? Only after modeling the channel's actual activity margin, revenue mix, operating continuity, and downside. A headline rule alone is not a valuation model.
How this guide is prepared
Social Bidz guides separate seller-supplied claims from evidence a buyer can check. Platform-policy statements should use public platform documentation, while prices and revenue are treated as variable marketplace data rather than promised results.
