YouTube revenue can change across the year even when content quality is stable. A buyer who annualizes a strong holiday month may overvalue the channel, while a buyer who studies only a quiet month may miss a repeatable seasonal peak.
Use a full-year view
Request at least 12 complete months of views, revenue, RPM, uploads, and production costs. Twenty-four months is better for channels tied to school calendars, sports seasons, holidays, tax deadlines, or recurring product launches.
Mark exceptional events: viral videos, sponsorships, long publishing gaps, demonetization periods, and major format changes. These should not be treated as ordinary seasonality.
Separate demand from advertising
Revenue may rise because more people watch, because advertiser demand changes, or both. Compare monthly views and RPM side by side. YouTube notes that CPM can shift with factors such as time of year, viewer geography, and available ad formats. See the official RPM and CPM explanation.
If views remain flat while RPM rises, do not assume the higher rate will persist. If views peak at the same time every year, investigate the viewer need driving that pattern.
Calculate normalized performance
Start with trailing-12-month totals rather than multiplying the latest month by 12. Then calculate a median month and identify peak and trough months.
Create an operating forecast that uses the channel's monthly pattern. Expenses may also be seasonal: more uploads, freelancers, or paid research can be required during peak periods.
Test whether the season transfers
Ask whether success depends on the seller's timing, relationships, or personal presence. A holiday channel with documented content calendars and reusable production files is different from one whose owner improvises every campaign.
Review search queries and top videos for each peak. Determine whether content must be refreshed and whether the rights remain valid.
Protect the handover date
Buying immediately after the peak can mean paying for cash that already occurred while funding the next slow period. Include working capital through the next expected peak. If the transfer happens during a critical publishing window, write transition support and asset-delivery dates into the deal terms.

Example annual pattern
Consider a hypothetical channel with flat monthly views but revenue that rises 60% in November and December. The first question is whether advertiser rates, sponsorships, or viewer mix caused the increase. The base forecast should use the full-year result, not December multiplied by 12.
Now consider a channel whose views rise each summer because students search for exam preparation. The buyer needs the editorial calendar and enough production lead time to publish before demand peaks. Buying after the season may require months of working capital.
Verification questions
Ask for monthly exports in one currency and time zone, dates of sponsorship payments, changes in upload frequency, and any videos published specifically for the peak. Compare the same months across years. Label months with missing uploads or policy events so they are not mistaken for ordinary seasonality.
A better seasonal valuation
Value the repeatable annual cycle, not the most flattering screenshot. Label assumptions, compare years where possible, and run a downside case where the next peak is weaker. Seasonality is manageable when it is visible, documented, and funded.

Is December revenue a valid baseline? Only when the channel's yearly pattern supports it. Otherwise use trailing-12-month performance and preserve December as a peak case.
What if only six months are available? Mark the missing seasons and widen the uncertainty range rather than inventing a full-year pattern.
Can production be seasonal too? Yes. Research, publishing volume, contractor availability, and sponsorship work can all change around the same peak.
